Beginner Triathlete Training Tips

You know that feeling you get when you look back and realize that you've accomplished something amazing... something you never thought you could do... something that's molded you into a stronger, more confident person and enhanced your life? Well that's the feeling you could have when you complete your first triathlon! At the start, many beginner triathletes feel overwhelmed when they begin their beginner triathlon training.

It can seem like they'll never be able to reach the Sprint triathlon distances: swim ½ mile, bike 14 miles and run 3 miles. But after months of hard work and training, they cross the finish line and they feel AWESOME! Do you want that feeling too? Well, here are a few beginner triathlon training tips to help you accomplish the goal of completing a triathlon.

Take it one day at a time. When you first start your beginner triathlon training, it can be hard to imagine that in a few short months you'll be able to complete a Sprint triathlon. It's easy to get overwhelmed and discouraged when you look so far ahead. So instead of focusing on the future, be present and take it one day at a time... on step at a time. Using a beginner specific triathlon training program, is a great way to not get overwhelmed because, if it's a good plan, then it will break your beginner triathlon training into bite size chunks that are both manageable and realistic. Before you know it, you'll be able to look back and be amazed at how far you've come. Just take it one day at a time and keep moving forward.


Listen to your body. Hopefully you've signed up for a Sprint triathlon for your first triathlon. While it is still a challenging distance, a sprint triathlon is the perfect length for a beginner triathlete to train for. As you train, make sure you listen to your body. If your arms are really sore one day, then go for a bike ride. If your knee is bothering you, swim laps. Or if your butt hurts from sitting on that small bike seat, then head out for a run. That's the beauty of a triathlon... there are 3 unique sports to train for and you can mix it up and keep your workouts interesting and specific to how your body feels on any given day.

Stretch. It is so important to stretch after every triathlon training workout. This is something that is often overlooked by many beginner triathletes and it leads to overtraining injuries and unnecessary aches and pains. Whether you take a yoga class or you have to set a timer to get yourself to stretch, make stretching a priority every day. You'll not only feel better, but you'll be less sore and that will make you a very happy beginner triahtlete! If you're following a good beginner triathlete training program, it should give you triathlon specific stretches to keep you feeling great!

Mix it Up. A great way to stay motivated and disciplined as you train for your triathlon is to keep things fun and add variety. Even though there are THREE sports to train for instead of just one, you can still get bored. So try a spin class, do an fartlek and interval workout, add a strength training routine into your training schedule or do sit ups and squats during commercial breaks when you're watching TV in the evening. Get creative! There are tons of ways to sneak fitness into your busy day and to keep things fun and enjoyable so that you will stick with your training.
