How To Study Effectively: Two Simple Tips To Create More Free Time

Did you know that time is actually the most important resource you have. Why? Well, it's the one thing in your life that is not renewable. Once you spend it you can't get it back and you certainly can't ever get more of it. No matter what. You can never ever get more time.

One of the most intriguing aspects of time is that humans regularly waste it despite it being a non-renewable resource. Don't we? Most people spend their lives effectively trading whatever time they have for money in order to hopefully create a situation where they have 10 or 20 years of "free time" at the end (i.e. retirement). The great goal in mind is that we get to 60 years old and we get to be free and spend our lives as we please from then on! That's pretty much the deal isn't it? The only problem with this plan is that you will be old when you have created some lengthy "free time" and there's absolutely no guarantee at all that you will make it to 60 - or that you will have enough money to stop time trading even if you get there!

In truth the way humans approach time is completely flawed. There is no guarantee on time. You could have 60 years or 60 seconds left. There is one thing you can be certain of though. You can be certain that you don't know how much time you have left. So, can you see that your time is valuable and not to be wasted?

So how do you spend your time? Have you been wasting it? Or do you spend your time wisely? Whilst we now know we can't get more time, we can always save time can't we? We can work faster or we can work smarter and by doing these things we can save time. When we save time we create more free time. We all like free time don't we?

We all love free time don't we? Free time is time free of any outside obligation. It's all yours to do with as you please. Ideally, your entire day (every day) would be free time. That would be time nirvana! But that's a discussion for another day. You want more free time so that you can spend more time doing whatever you want to do (like play video games or sit on the internet for 6 hours straight for no reason). So let's look at two simple strategies that you can use straight away to create more free time.

Number one: Add lots of short breaks into your study schedule. Four 15-minute breaks each night is one hour of free time. If you do that from Monday to Friday that's five extra hours of free time this week! If you don't take breaks regularly your mind will wander anyway and you will be in a "junk time" phase - where no work is being completed but you are still "studying". If you feel like you've lost focus always take a break.

Number two: There are certain times that are what we call "dead time". Dead time is time when you're not working towards any of your goals but it's also not free time. It's just dead time. For example, you might be walking the dog, riding your bike, sitting on the bus or in a car (not being driven by you!), or waiting at the train station for the train to come. This is time that isn't used for anything much - so start using it.

There are plenty of things that can be done during this time. Listen to a recording you made of some information you need to memorize. Practice a speech or pitch you're working on. Look over some flash cards. Do some reading. Watch a video on your phone (hopefully something that actually advances your current life goal - not just funny cute cat videos). This is time that you can use to get ahead. If you do 20 minutes of work on the bus on the way home then that's 20 minutes less you have to do when you get home. If you do that every day for five days a week that will be 100 minutes ahead each week. If you do that every week you will be 5200 minutes ahead (which is 86.67 hours in case you were wondering).

It's time to start valuing your time more than you ever have before. Remember, your time is always coming to an end. You just don't know when that end point is. I hope for you that it's still 100 years away. But there's a good chance it's less than that. Much less! So make every minute count. Save as much time as you can and spend your life doing something meaningful to you. Good luck.

My Private Story of My Speaking Career

I left my 9 - 5 Corporate America job to pursue my speaking full time on January 31, 2013, I was excited to be taking the big leap of faith. I was prepared to show the world that I was able to take it on by storm with my speaking profession. What I did not show typically was how freaking scared I was. The thought of receiving steady paychecks on a bi-weekly (and often weekly) basis, was a very comfy space for me.

Now let me be clear, this was not my 1st journey of setting off to personal my own enterprise. There happen to be two other instances exactly where I left my full time job together with the intentions of never coming back. Needless to say, when the cash was not coming within the bills have been overdue and my life style was less than favorable. It was in these moments where I gave in and went crawling back to Corporate America. Grant it, given my capabilities and expertise, they had been more than happy to take me back.

I was in it several months, then the bills came around, previous due notices showed up, I was in a new relationship and the strain was there. At some point, the rent was behind three months, lights had just gotten reduce off, phone was cut off and also the net connection (which was my main connection to new and prospective consumers) was quickly to become reduce off.

I was within a prime position to throw inside the towel and do my usual thing and go back to Corporate America. Having said that, there was some thing distinct. It's important you reflect on this because attacks like this on young people have been shown to have a profoundly negative and long-lasting impact that can often remain with the person for their entire life! Comments like this can shatter self-belief and can significantly impact the way a person views themselves - particularly when delivered at a young age. When someone is told they are 'pathetic' or 'useless' or 'stupid' by a higher (and often respected or feared) authority than them (such as a sibling, classmate, parent, teacher, relative, older stranger) the individual can actually believe that to be the truth - even without any evidence to support it. The biggest problem however is that a person's self-confidence is directly related to the attitude they apply to their education (and their 'learning' in general). So when a negative comment is directed to a young person about their ability to learn and understand things, it can still be affecting the attitude they have to their schooling in high school and college.

What's Your Worth?

The esteem that you hold yourself in is a direct reflection of your feelings of ability and worth. This is very important in your studies because it impacts your confidence and your willingness to be open to learning and trying new things. Research shows there is a very strong link between students with high self-esteem and high achievement level. As expected, the opposite is also true, low self-esteem tends to result in a low achievement level. Can these trends be bucked? Yes of course they can - but it's not the norm.

Time To Make A Change!

Let's not get all down in the dumps feeling sorry for ourselves! You now understand one reason why people feel down about their learning ability. But whether or not you feel you have high self-esteem at the moment, the real point of this article is to help build you up and allow you to become the best you that you can possibly be. We want you to be awesome, not just good. We want you to be a powerful force, not just strong. So what do you want? Let's look at some tips to help boost your confidence.

1. Let's get positive, positive, I want to get positive, let's get into positive (think theme song from 'Let's Get Physical'). Just be positive - about every single thing! Especially yourself. Talk yourself up. What's the point in being negative anyway - what does it solve? Does it make anything better? Or does it make it much worse? Try being positive about every single thing for one whole week. That's right - a week. You can do it. Try it. See what happens. Then do two weeks, three weeks and more. What do you think will happen? There is no doubt that if you do this and stick to it, your attitude will change dramatically. Make it happen.

2. Think of all the good things about you and any success you have had. If you're not sure ask your friends, siblings or parents. What have you achieved so far? What would you like to achieve? What are the great things about you? Are you a good friend? What do you care about? What's important to you? Write down anything you can think and keep adding to the list when you think of something new. Read the list every morning when you wake up and every time you're feeling down in the dumps. Never allow your inner voice to tell you that there is nothing good about you. Fight back. Finally, stop comparing yourself to others. Whilst others' lives may seem to be perfect it's never the case. Don't fall into the trap of looking at the grass across the street - focus on your own grass! You don't know which one is really greener.

3. Attack what you perceive to be your weaknesses. Get hard-core on those weaknesses. Go full on crazy house. Hit them with a left. Hit them with a right. Just prove to yourself every day that "you can do it." (Remember that every Adam Sandler movie tells us that 'we can do it' - thank you Rob Schneider) Never allow others OR your own thoughts to stop you from doing anything ever!

4. Get involved in activities you actually enjoy. You will likely be successful in these activities which will boost your confidence. It doesn't matter whether you are good at art, marbles, butt-slapping or sport, just do things that make you feel good and things that get you excited (don't do anything that harms others please!)
