Stop Those Frown Lines With A Non Invasive Treatment

By Dern Heatherton

Botox Cosmetic has for years retained the title as the most commonly performed "non-surgical" cosmetic procedure in the United States, based on its ease of use and consistently good cosmetic results.

Not surprisingly, the treatment of the frown lines is one of the most popular treatment procedures for Botox patients. The reason Botox can make your frown lines disappear is that when you inject the frown muscle with an adequate dose of Botox Cosmetic, it stops moving. The frown lines disappear because the frown muscle can no longer contract and thus can no longer wrinkle up the overlying skin.

Again, the most common area of treatment with Botox is the frown line between the eyes. Botox was actually approved for frown lines in 2002 by the FDA. The popularity of treating the frown lines with Botox is the high rate of patient satisfaction with the results. It relaxes the frown, and in the process smooths out the vertical lines between the brows that can make you look "angry" or "unapproachable", even when you are not.

Candidates for cosmetic surgery should be in generally good physical health and must be candid with their physician about any drugs they are taking. The medical history should always be as detailed as possible. You want to include anything that could affect blood clotting or interact with any medication used in the procedure. These could include hormones, aspirin, vitamins, and herbal medications.

Before surgery, even minor treatments such as BOTOX, patients should be educated about all aspects of the planned treatment, including whether to discontinue certain medications and stop smoking.

To achieve the most desired results, you should take the following precautionary measures when preparing for your Botox treatment:

- Before engaging in strenuous activity or exercise, give yourself 24 hours

- Do your best to stay upright for 4-5 hours after the injections

- Avoid massaging the treated area

- Practice daily facial exercises as directed by your doctor

- Wear sun block

It is best to restrict muscle movements right after your Botox procedure. This will give the agent a sufficient amount of time to settle.

On average, the effects of Botox injections last anywhere from 3-6 months. After those six months, facial lines and wrinkles will start to reappear, though not as prominently as prior to the procedure. Naturally, when this occurs, patients can opt to have their Botox treatment repeated. Repeated Botox procedures will be lasting progressively longer with each treatment. As such, a patient will require fewer procedures to achieve their desired results.
